Metadata did not matter so much when news was packaged in a newspaper. The Internet, and the search engines and social networks that power the web, have broken the newspaper package down into discrete pieces of content. New open standards for cataloging content will create an ecology of structured data that makes search more intelligent, enables innovation, and opens up new revenue opportunities.
