Newspaper paywalls: An update

Several newspapers have initiated paywalls or other types of metering systems in the last year to combat lost ad revenue. While most of these news sites experienced (and likely anticipated) a drop in traffic, a few have actually seen an increase in unique page views.

We did some research to find the papers that launched paywalls this year (some, like Newsday and The Tulsa World, are reinstigating paywall programs from the past). We then looked at ComScore Compete data to compare each site's unique monthly page views before the paywall compared to the most recent numbers (from May), then calculated the percent change between the two. Here's what we found, ordering the news sites from the largest percent change in traffic to the smallest.

In future posts we will be looking into more analysis about the topic.

"All the money they lost"??? 100K pageviews is worth $500 if they are lucky to be selling near the market rate.

what is "unique monthly page views". I know "page views" and "unique monthly visitors", but what is the definition of "unique monthly page views"?

Jesus christ! Some of these papers lost 100k pageviews or more! Good lord, just think of all the money they gave up! They could have used it to buy a new water cooler! Or sponsor a little league team! They're doomed! Dooooooomed!!!!

Great article, Amanda. It might be worth checking out the general trend line for newspaper websites: http://www.naa.org/Trends-and-Numbers/Newspaper-Websites/Newspaper-Web-A... A 10 percent drop in traffic might not seem like a lot, but it is if your peers gained 20 percent traffic during the same time period... i.e., that's really a 30 percent drop in where your traffic would have been if you hadn't put up a paywall. Similarly, a 5 percent gain in traffic seems good if everyone else stayed flat. If your peers gained 20 percent traffic during the same time period, you're really looking at a 15 percent loss in potential traffic. Statistics for the win.
