NY Times digital subscribers pass 500,000

The digital paywall The New York Times put into effect in March 2011 continues to gain traction. Approximately 509,000 people now subscribe, up 13% year over year, according to the company's quarterly earnings report. The paywall’s growth is in contrast to continued declines in both print (-8%) and digital (-4%) advertising. The Times reported an operating loss of $143.6 million for the quarter, attributed largely to a $194.7 million non-cash writedown for the About Group. Original Story
