ThumbMedia launches 'Mozine' app solution for publishers
Add this to the list of publisher development tools for apps: The Mozine platform, from ThumbMedia Group, is an all-in-one creation and distribution solution for publishers to create mobile magazines or "Mozines." The first two magazines unveiled on the platform are Nylon and WWE, both of which go beyond straight digital magazine replicas to integrate online and interactive content.
ThumbMedia CEO Mike Cartabiano told me the service provides a sort of “snack-size version of a magazine,” integrating it with other functions the publisher wants (online, rich media, social, etcetera). The app is a native app, meaning it is based on the mobile Web, which he said makes it easier to update.
The Mozine platform is available for smartphones including Android, BlackBerry and iPhone as well as the iPad, and more tablets could be added as they roll out, he said. A cross-platform strategy is important for publishers because the market isn't dominated by Apple, he noted; among the current Mozine apps on the market, half of the downloads are coming from Android and BlackBerry.
Mozine is priced via a monthly fee that varies based on the complexity of the app, as well as ad revenue-sharing, Cartabiano said. (The fee is waived when a certain revenue is reached.)
Mozine joins a growing list of digital magazine tools, ranging from roll-your-own solutions like the WoodWing software to full-service offerings such as Mozine, which is more like having an outsourced mobile department.
“We know that publishers’ resources are very very stressed and they have their hands full,” Carabiano said. “They don’t need a group coming in and offering a mobile media channel and then asking the publisher to do extra work in a medium that is very difficult to understand and manage.”
ThumbMedia works with publishers to determine the content and frequency, and then the publisher provides the content in its regular format (pdf, feeds) to be put into the Mozine, he said. ThumbMedia builds the app and handles all of the distribution, customer service and updates. An in-app purchasing function supports subscriptions.
ThumbMedia also handles the advertising through mobile ad networks; it also can deploy campaigns sold by the publisher.
