Video: Bridging the hack/hacker divide
This week's coverage of SXSW 2012 in Austin, Texas, is provided by Next Issue Media.
At SXSW Interactive, we met with Ben Balter, CTO of Hacks/Hackers, a grassroots journalism organization with a mission to create a network of journalists (“hacks”) and technologists (“hackers”) who rethink the future of news and information.
Balter, a self-proclaimed geek, was part of the panel “Content and Coding Are Not Commodities” and talked about how news organizations can bridge the divide between the newsroom and the coders, who are often hidden away in the basement.

In the video interview Balter offers these tips:
- Talk in terms of problems
- Speak the right language
- Move the geeks into the newsroom
- Collaborate early in the process
- Challenge the coders
